Spinel gemstones are singly refractive, which means that like diamonds it has the same physical properties in all directions. Throughout history, Spinel gemstones have often been misidentified as Rubies; the Black Prince's Ruby which has been a famous gem in the British Imperial Crown since the 14th century is actually a Spinel. Part of the confusion among Rubies and Spinels could be that though they are composed of different minerals (Ruby is corundum and Spinel is its own mineral) the trace element that creates the strong reddish pinkish color in both gems is the same: chromium. In fact, it wasn't until 1783 that Spinel gemstones were identified as a different mineral so that they could be distinguished from Rubies, this discovery was made by a mineralogist by the name of Jean Baptiste Louis Rome De Lisle.
