Fancy Colored Tourmaline Gemstones
This collection of loose tourmaline gemstones is very interesting. These beautiful faceted tourmaline gems do not fall into any of the other tourmaline collections. When the gemstones color is more unusual, or they do not have a distinct color I classify them as "other tourmalines". These colors can be a combination of different hues or just a very unusual color. Tourmaline comes in every color hue and color combination possible. It is a very complex mineral species. Be sure to see AfricaGems vast selection of unique, individual gems.
Rare Chrome Tourmaline Gemstones
Loose chrome tourmaline gemstones are a very difficult gemstone to find in larger, finer qualities. Amongst the most beautiful of all tourmaline gemstones, chrome tourmalines are unique in the tourmaline family of gems because they are mined in only one country in the world-Tanzania. AfricaGems has always had top quality faceted chrome tourmaline gemstones in inventory. Chrome Tourmaline gemstones tend to be available in mostly the darker tones which make the gems too dark, lifeless and generally boring. Chrome tourmaline is very difficult to buy in the raw state as transmitted light through the rough gives the appearance of open color. Only when the raw gems are faceted is the true color of the gems revealed in reflected light. In the top qualities, chrome tourmaline can rival a fine quality emerald in color and beauty, and fashions into spectacular gemstone jewelry. The "chrome" color is due to minute traces of chromium/vanadium in the crystal structure. In the larger sizes, chrome tourmaline is very rare in fine qualities, as the size of the gem is generally inversely proportional to the quality of the color.
Multi Colored or Parti Colored Tourmaline Gemstones
This loose Parti-Colored Tourmaline gemstone collection is very unusual in the fine, uniform quality of the gemstones. I am quite proud of these gems, as I was the first gemstone dealer to bring them to the gem markets and to give them the trade name "Parti Color". These unusual gems were subject to a featured article in Gems & Gemology magazine. The faceted tourmalines display a dazzling variety of multiple colors, green, red, gold, yellow, brown, and pinks. In some of the better quality tourmalines, all of these colors can be seen. These tourmalines are very similar looking to fine Andalucite gems. All of these gems were produced from a single locality in eastern Zambia, near the Malawi border. I bought most of the better quality production from this mine. In addition to the parti colored tourmalines, this mine also produced fine bi color tourmalines, pink tourmalines, rubelite tourmalines and raspberry tourmalines. It was rumored that this mine was discovered when a latrine was being dug! The Parti-colored Tourmaline gemstones that were produced are of exceptionally fine quality.
Bi Color Tourmaline & Tourmaline Slices Gemstones
Are very recognizable and very popular tourmaline gems. This loose Bi-Color Tourmaline gemstone collection is very unusual in the fine, uniform quality of the bi color tourmaline gems. All of these bi color tourmaline gems were produced from a single locality in eastern Zambia. This is the same deposit that produced the beautiful selection of rubelite tourmaline, raspberry tourmaline and parti color tourmalines in some of the other sections of the tourmaline gemstones. These unique bi color tourmalines were discovered by a man who was digging a latrine! I bought most of the better quality production of the tourmalines from this mine. The Bi Color Tourmalines that were produced are of exceptionally fine quality. The colors are beautiful and intense with excellent division of color. Some of the tourmalines are almost a tri color tourmaline, with three distinct colors, pinkish red, colorless and green. These bi colors are very unusual in that they are free of inclusions, which is very uncommon with bi color tourmalines.
