The most valuable gems come from Sri Lanka, Burma and Kashmir. Kashmir production is almost nonexistent. Other important high quality sources recently discovered are from Madagascar. Besides color, evenness and uniformity of color, or lack of zoning, is very important. Flaws diminish the price more so than in fine rubies. Blue sapphires are commonly heat treated to improve color and clarity, but treated stones do not command the prices that a fine, vivid blue natural color gem does. Many of our blue sapphire gems are accompanied by a third party certificate and appraisal. Many of these sapphires have been recut in the USA to American standards and cannot be compared to native cut gems. Our USA cut sapphires have unsurpassed brilliance, and a much sharper "look" which makes all the difference in the finished jewelry product.

Fine Blue Sapphire Gemstones at AfricaGems
Loose blue sapphire gemstones have long been an AfricaGems.com specialty. We carry a vast selection of very fine blue sapphire gems. Blue sapphire is a member of the corundum family of gemstones, and unlike ruby gemstones, has many different source locations. Blue sapphires from Burma and Kashmir are the most highly sought after blue sapphires, followed by Ceylon blue sapphires. The cornflower blue color of a high quality blue sapphire gem is the standard by which other blue sapphires are judged. Most sapphires of any color are heat treated, which is always noted on any sapphire AfricaGems.com sells. Fine quality sapphires with no heat treatment command the highest prices. Some sapphires have been altered with chemical diffusion; AfricaGems does not sell these sapphires. Many of our sapphire gemstones are accompanied by a third party certificate of appraisal and retail value. Many of these sapphires have been recut in the USA to American standards and cannot be compared to native cut gems. Our USA cut sapphire gemstones have unsurpassed brilliance and a much sharper "look". Our amazing collection boasts the gamut of faceted gemstone cuts and shapes and many of our stones are top quality with gemstone certificates. Blue Sapphires, in addition to being the birthstone gem for the month of September, are also considered to be one of the three precious gemstones along with Ruby and Emerald. Unheated Sapphire - Best Loose Unheated Sapphire for Jewelry
The ruby and sapphire, or corundum world is divided into two camps, the natural heat treated ruby gems and heat treated blue sapphire and the natural unheated-untreated ruby and sapphire gemstones. About 90% of all sapphire available in the gem markets are heat treated. AfricaGems is very fortunate to have an incredible inventory of natural unheated blue, pink, yellow sapphire and purple sapphires in stock. These sapphires have not undergone any kind of thermal or other types of gemstone treatments. We won't talk about chemically diffused sapphires as these are another entirely different topic and AfricaGems doesn't sell these artificially colored sapphires.
Blue Sapphire Treatments
Sapphire has been mined for thousands of years and sapphire heat treatment has been known for many years and mastered by the Thai ruby and sapphire gem dealers in more recent years. In Sri Lanka, a primary source for blue sapphire, most sapphire rough gems are mined as "gueda". These gueda sapphire crystals are not transparent due to numerous rutile inclusions and appear to be almost milky in transparency and color. In the 1960's Thai corundum dealers discovered that when these "worthless" gueda were heat treated, some of the results where nothing short of miraculous. These heat treated gueda sapphire resulted in incredible cornflower blue sapphires! When heated to very high temperatures, the internal inclusions "melt" away, and the transparency or brilliance, color and overall appearance of the sapphire is greatly improved. Even very attractive sapphires that have only a few inclusions will be heat treated to bring out the very best color and brilliance possible. Untreated blue sapphires command the highest prices as they are much rarer than equal quality sapphires that have been heat treated. Untreated blue sapphires make wonderful gemstone rings.

What's in the Star Sapphire?
A Star Sapphire is a type of Sapphire that exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism. The six-rayed star is caused by intersecting needle-like inclusions following the underlying crystal structure when viewed with a single overhead light source. The Star Sapphire is typically given a Cabochon cut, as a faceted cut will no longer offer up a star. Twelve rayed stars are occasionally found, or parallel inclusions can create a "cats-eye" effect. The most desirable color of a Star Sapphire is a vivid, intense blue.

The gem that had once been a doorstop began its journey to fame. The Black Star has been priced at around $50 million. Other famous Star Sapphires include the Star of Asia, which weighs 330 carats. It is one of the world's finest Star Sapphire and is on display in the Smithsonian Institute.
